BOOK REVIEW: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey | 5/5

To begin with, there is so much hype on this book, I grabbed it way before I found out what it was about. Ok, it's Science Fiction. At first I really thought it's about a Zombie Apocalypse, but it's not. It's an Alien Apocalypse book.

Now this is my first attempt to read a book outside the New Adult/ YA/ Children's Book zone, and I didn't really know what to expect.

Here's the thing... This book is so good I paced through the last 300 pages in a blink. Though let me be honest to say that during the first 100 pages, I was completely bored. But as I began to see in other people's viewpoint, I began to get excited. The changing POV helped me understand the whole thing more. So thank you for that, Yancey.

I liked the style of writing. I like the either/or dilemma of the main character, Cassie. I like that the readers were able to get the entire what's-going-on-in-Cassie's-head thing. We get to see her confusion, her fear, and her loneliness. But at the same time, we saw her strength, and her determination.

At first, what drove me to pursue the book, is the relationship of Cassie to her brother Sammy. I understand their connection, for I myself has a brother. And honestly, I cried in this book, during the heart melting scene at Camp Ashpit and the yellow school bus. Oh, and the teddy bear!

And then we get introduced to Evan Walker, whose character is as confusing as the rest of the whole alien invasion thing. But eventually, light knocks in, and we get to love Evan for what he chose to be. I actually like his character, I think we should admire his passion to decide which side to take. Not everyone has the courage to decide.

I also like Ben Parish, the popular guy from Cassie's high school. And honestly, I expected his character to be arrogant. But he's just a sweetheart, that you can never hate. He's braver than anyone in this book, even Cassie.

The ending was well written, though of course Yancey has got to leave questions for the readers and a right amount of cliffhanger. But still, it was satisfying. I only have one question though, is this going to be a love triangle?
