#nowwatching: LIMITLESS

I've been watching this series I randomly found on Netflix and it's called "Limitless". The premise of the story is about this normal kid, possibly a failure at life, who managed to get access to a superdrug called NZT which allowed him to access 100% of his brain capacity, thereby making him a genius. And then he ends up working for the FBI.

When I was a kid, there was a newscaster by the name of Ernie Baron. He tackled the weather forecast. He had this slogan, "Knowledge is power" and after all this time, I think I only just uncracked its potential meaning.

I always knew education is important. I was raised by it, with it, into it, just like you. I was taught that if I study and graduate, I will do better in life. And there I thought it was the meaning of the slogan. If I study and graduate and find a job and get promoted, then I become powerful. Later on I realized it doesn't mean exactly that way. And this epiphany, this intellectual intervention only came to me upon watching a mere TV show by the name of "Limitless".

There was a scene, a dialogue, where one of the lead characters spoke, "I'd always wondered what it was like for Brian, when he was on NZT. I figured he felt numb, like a human calculator. I was wrong. Every part of you feels alive, open, the air crackles with information. You breathe it like it's oxygen. It's as if you've been running with weights on for your entire life, and suddenly you took them off and this was the way you always were meant to be. I knew now why it was so addicting." And then it hit me, because I knew exactly what she meant. And I think that is the true meaning of power.

Knowing the law. Studying the law. Understanding the law. It's like knowing, studying, and understanding how the world works. And once I knew how it works, living in it, becomes easy. I keep reading people's minds, observing people's actions, and encoding people's words. I thought, this is probably what it means to be alive. To see things from a macro perspective. It's like reverse engineering scenarios as it happens. I can foresee things before it enravels and I base my reactions through that. I can tell when my words are going to backfire so I choose not to say it at all. I can feel people's moods and I base my tone through that. I can tell bad timing from good timing. I can manipulate some of the things around me to go exactly where I want, and worse, to stay exactly where I want. I place them there so they provide me the exact gravity pull I need to keep afloat.

It's not exactly a bad thing. I am not planning to murder or rob somebody. But it's a nice feeling. To know things from a unique perspective. To feel power in the real sense. To feel knowledge like a power. And like "Limitless" said, it is so addicting. And the thing is, there is no other way to interpret this power and to receive it in a more tangible way rather than mere confirmation, acceptance, and praise. When constantly you get adored for predicting things that turn out to be true eventually, you get high. So this is how it feels, to be in love with the same thing that ruins you at the same time.

I know because I can tell. Like all things in life, power comes with complications, and  sometimes even collateral damage.

It starts with the book (my thoughts on 13 Reasons Why)

Okay, I think it's time for me to finally address "Thirteen Reasons Why" and Why I Didn't Like The Book and Why I Will Never Watch the Show.

I've kept my mouth shut for as long as I can keep my mouth shut. It came to a point where every damn little post on Facebook and Twitter is about the show: memes, updates, reactions, etc.

I have a bizarre mind. And it usually manifests when I'm angry. That's why I never judge people and their own bizarre minds.

I have nothing against people who loved the book or the people who loves the show. But this is why I don't and I won't.

This will explain why.
And I'm not asking you to agree with me.

It starts with the book. As a reader, I prefer books that impresses me. I usually go for characters that will inspire me. Characters that are strong. If not, then characters created to follow that same trajectory.

The premise of the story is worth the applause. After all, I bought the book to read. But what I didn't realize is that page by page, I found myself frustrated. I didn't see eye to eye with Hannah Baker. A character that is supposed to inspire me, annoyed me.

I didn't finish the book. (Yes, I hear you already cursing me for having this opinion even without reading the whole book) The thing is, I hate being told what to do. I have no intention to finish a book I don't like. I always thought, "Reading is supposed to be pleasurable, not pressurable."

Now let's talk about her "reasons". Given that I didn't finish the book, then follows the algorithm that I never figured out her other "reasons". I think I got to the last three. And three is enough for me to want to kill her myself if she didn't only kill herself.

There's one way to look at it: Every word, no matter how insignificant, affects us.

But this is how I saw it: Damn. I thought sadness and depression leads to suicide? From what I see, she was just mad. She was so mad that she caused other people trouble for it. And suicide is her last resort for revenge. After all, people grieve. Death makes the living regretful, no matter what.

I know the gravity of suicide and depression. In fact, in many times, I am always taunted to jump out the window to end this miserable life of mine. Perhaps my thoughts aren't as significant as a diagnosed patient with depression. But is it really the list of problems that's the problem? To a person allergic to dust, dust can kill a person.

But here's the deal. If I decide to kill myself, that will be a decision I will make myself... by  myself and for myself. Not for other people... not to drag them along with me to depression.

As a reader, this is what I came to interpret. It's not how petty her reasons are - because they are anyway (at least the last three, I know it gets BIG) - it's about the breadcrumbs she left behind. It wasn't a goodbye note, it was a revenge trail.

And that is WHY.
That is why I hated the book.

Hannah Baker, as a book character
was weak
selfish
driven by hatred
and revenge.

Like a kid who likes to point fingers
Worse than
The kid who kept silent

Hannah Baker,
I didn't see her as sick (mentally ill),
I saw her as sick (gruesome).

But ladies and gentlemen,
That is the book only.

For some reason, when a person portrays it on tv, it becomes a different discussion. All of a sudden, talking shit over it, makes it bullying
Thus making me a bad person
Or worse
An outcast.

Now, let me tell you WHY -
I'm the kind of person who stands ground
If I hate something, I don't pretend an ounce that I adore it.
In fact, if I don't keep silent about it, I shout it out to the world
It's a pride thing

Ask yourself.
If I hated the shoes,
Why would I buy it just because it came in my favorite color?

I'm not about the design.
I'm about the brand.
I'm about what it stands for.

It's like buying a good makeup from a cruelty based brand.
When coming from the vegan,
It's abomination.

I hated the book and everything it implies (or how I interpreted it at least),
So why would I watch the show?
It's abomination.

#nowwatching: Doctor Strange (Reflection)

I was never a fan of Marvel. I didn't really understand the hype surrounding superman, or batman, or thor. I never had a favorite superhero. To me, it all seemed overhyped and superfluous.

I was envious of my friends. While they crave for the new trailer that lasts 10 seconds, I was there pretending I cared. I nodded along every conversation, attended every batman themed party, and joined along the excitement of it all.

I didn't understand why I didn't understand. Frustrated of it all, I remember blaming my Mom at one point. I asked her why I don't recall the batman story or the superman story. I thought I must have watched it when I was little, right? But then again, I can't even recite the plot, nor do I know where to start. I was a stranger to the world of Marvel.

My Mom gave me this answer: I don't know. Superheroes don't interest me anyway. Maybe that's why.

And so, I grew up carrying that bag of ignorance. (PS. It wasn't heavy.)

But I saw Doctor Strange just now.
Many times I felt left out,
An outsider to this world of men wearing tights and saving the day.
As an adult, equipped with my own choice, I decided to give Marvel a chance.
(Sorry. Perhaps my brain was synchronized with my Mom's influence on films and tv.)
And although they were good,
I find they weren't that great.

But I saw Doctor Strange just now.
And let me just say this.

All the variables were there. Okay, maybe just one: Benedict Cumberbatch, and yet, I decided to flip the page over and over again. I neglected to see the film numerous time. If the 19 year old me was still existent, she probably would have argued. She would have watched it right away, if not on the first day.

I remember distinctly when Doctor Strange first came out, or should I say, the first time I had the chance to see it but I chose otherwise. What I ended up seeing instead was a complete bullshit. A total waste of my money and time. In fact, if the 19 year old me is still existent, she probably would have argued.

But the 22 year old me, didn't bother. I didn't like any of the things I've been doing lately but I keep doing it anyway. While I was trap in that moment, I didn't seem to mind. I was high on the pleasure of "showing off", and that I was changing (a term I clung myself with religiously), that I was turning away from the emo girl and giving away more mystery.

I am obsessed with confusing people that I got confused just the same. I am many things, but what I surely am is self-identified. I knew myself. I know exactly my course of thought. I've memorized every pattern from every turn. I knew it so much that I could manipulate it sometimes. I mean, I've jumped over many bridges without the risks. I skipped over processes of pain, healing, and experience. I disregarded them because regardless I know I'd reach my destination. I predicted my future because I trusted my own thoughts.

(I realized I was slightly skewing away from my main point.)

Doctor Strange was amazing. If I would rate it, I'd give it a 10 of 10. But I'm not going to be talking about the cinematography, the acting, or the story line. I'm going to talk about how it made me feel.

And it made me feel a stranger. Being a stranger to many other people may be bad, but being a stranger to yourself is the worse thing.

I was always proud. That I could survive, I believed. Once again, I relied on my thoughts to solve every bit of problem I encounter. But I looked around and I saw what I was proud of: proving to myself that I could be proud of things I know I can't be proud of. That, I'm proud of. Going against the flow. Contradicting myself. That I was proving strength, away from my own thoughts. That yes, I could be smarter. Smarter than my brain, exactly. Rebellion. Like a student to his master.

Doctor Strange represented exactly who I was, just a year ago. Bookish. Nerdy. Innocent. Magick. Alive.

Remember that time I preached "Heal the world"?
The volunteering on orphanages?
The bag of donations every Christmas?
The time I was actually certain I'd adopt children?
And actually made the world a better place?
Where did she go?

It's been a while since a movie actually succeeded into "moving" me. Mostly were just mocking me. I remember. I remember what I forgot. That "moveness" after seeing a great film, or after finishing off a great book series. That feeling of escapism. That feeling of being alive. That feeling of triumph. That life actually made sense. That life is so much more than a sickening routine.

I am not religious. I don't enjoy practicing Christianity, although I enjoy practicing Christian traditions like Christmas and Easter. What intrigues me more is magick (spelled with "c" yes). I believe in balance. In the nature of things. I believe in energy. Meditation. That the mind is such a powerful being (not a thing, a "being"). Because it is alive, and not a mere organ.

So where do I stand now? Should I go back to the "old" me (I talk about it a lot anyway. Does it mean I am prepared to rekindle?) Or should I just stick with the me "now"?

Everybody seems to like this one anyway, except me.

#nowwatching: W (Korean Drama)

Yo!

OH MY FUDGE
OMG
*insert every possible curse combination here*

I don't even know where to start. This Korean Drama is absolutely mental! It's blowing my mind into tiny little Lilah Gran clones, each one trying to decipher every clue, every move, every twist, in every episode!

Seldom does a show, a movie, or a book, captivates me to such extent. Usually, nothing surprises me anymore. I get bored. My mind can coordinate with the author's, and somewhere along the line, I get what he's trying to deliver. I can usually foresee the ending. Well, 75% of the time at least I am right.

I probably haven't even watched that many movies, or encountered that many plot twists, but I always paid attention... to the details. I can always just tell. Like a gut feeling. And I always perceived it as common sense.

I like a story that will confuse me, that will spark a connection. That's why I have never entertained the ordinary. May it be in any aspect of my life. I've always craved for something extraordinary. It doesn't come often, but when it does, it pulls me in like a magnet. And that's the only time I can answer "Yes, it was absolutely amazing! I loved every bit of it!" on the question "Is it good? Did you enjoy it?"

When people ask me to rate a film I just watched, rarely if not never, I give a ten. Perhaps I nourished such a high standard to everything, but believe me, the high was worth it. When it hits you, it hits bigtime. It leaves a mark that lasts.

That's why I love art, especially abstract, because it attracts confusion. I like to confused. I like the drama. I like the adrenaline rush. I enjoy it. I dwell in it.

This Korean Drama is totally different from any K-Dramas I have watched before, or (actually) any show I've every watched IN MY ENTIRE LIFE... period. I have never seen anything like it. I can't even begin to explain how I feel about it. It's just... magnificent. It's a masterpiece!

The plot from the very start is already unique in its nature. That made me both excited and worried. Sometimes, shows with a good backdrop turns out to be such a disappointment. But this drama is an exception. Every episode is a healthy dose heart attack. Every episode contains a whirlwind of plot twists. As early as Episode 3/4, I remember pausing and thinking, "This can't be Episode 3/4! This has to be the MAJOR twist. This can't be happening as early as this. The show has 13 more episodes left!" But then it keeps on happening, over and over again. In every episode, the twists get bigger and bigger. It's become a whirlwind of events that I had to wonder if the writers got confused themselves. Well, I would have if it were me.

It's taking over my brain cells. I, seriously, for once after such a long time, have no idea how the story will end. It's the first time after a long time that I have missed a detail. It's the first time after such a long time that I gasped on big reveals. And a first after a while that I had to stare blankly at the wall because WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED, OMG!

FINALLY, I FEEL LIKE AN ACTUAL AUDIENCE.
I feel subordinated.
I feel weak.
I feel vulnerable.
I feel defeated.
I feel captivated.
And that's always been the way to get my attention.

It is mental! So mental!

It is so good I wish I have written it myself!

I have to stop here, I have about 5 more episodes to go, and I am going INSANE!

#nowwatching: My Top 5 Kdrama of 2014

Watching Korean Dramas, no matter how cliche the story gets or annoying the story ends, is my guilty pleasure. The year 2014 wasn't my most productive KDrama year, but I did manage to watch a few newly released TV shows. Take note that this list will only contain Korean Dramas I've watched and loved in 2014. I think I may have backtracked a bit, and found myself watching classic Korean Dramas like My Girl during mid-year. Or so I thought that was last year... was it?

To begin with, let me first give you a full list of all the 2014-released Dramas I've watched as of this moment (with initial thoughts):

  • Bride of the Century (I loved this! Details below!)
  • The Night Watchmen (Pacing of the story is too slow)
  • Emergency Couple (Everyone loved this Drama, I don't understand why I didn't that much)
  • Marriage, Not Dating (I watched this the early days of 2015, but it's still a 2014 Drama, right? Does that count?)
  • I Need Romance 3 (Best kissing scenes!)
  • Birth of a Beauty (Pretty female lead, but very annoying!)
  • 3 Days (I started watching this, but failed to finish it. A friend of mine loved it though, thus she recommended it to me. Maybe I should re-watch this)
  • You Who Came From The Stars (Everyone loved the alien! And also Chicken and Beer lol)
  • Doctor Stranger (Watched the first few episodes. I can't remember why I discontinued)
  • Hotel King (I loved the beginning, but the latter was a drag. And the female lead was too clingy)
  • Cunning Single Lady (When I go back to this, nothing really stands out. The plot seems very generic)
  • Empress Ki (Annoying Emperor, but I still loved him!)
  • Prime Minister and I (This could have been perfect if the male lead was taller lol What a turn-off)

And now for my official list!
