WHAT KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT #5: Co-equals

To be genuine friends with anybody, and to cultivate a healthy relationship, both have to be co-equals of each other.

I actually thought she treated him as an equal, a gym buddy, or even as a friend, but when she gave him something unusable under the disguise of a "gift", I don't think it is in any way a representation of true friendship. In fact I think she is putting herself higher than him. She is exhibiting superiority, whether intentional or unintentional. The thing with the subconscious mind is that it speaks more of the intention compare to the conscious mind.

I'm writing about it here because I know for a fact he wouldn't listen to me. He is in some aspect, corrupted by his admiration of her talent. And I've given up arguments on it. I'll just let it go this time. Let him be.

WHAT KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT #4: False Advertising

This sounds familiar. I'd like to acknowledge the influence of social media and share my horrifying realization that these institutions that are supposed to help the society find their motivation to pursue a fit and healthy lifestyle are the same institutions that uninspires you to continue.

Be careful upon entering gyms because you'll never know what the industry actually think of you. They could offer their hand but on the other hand, they body shame you. Manipulation exists in places you don't realize by people you think are kind of enough to help you, even displaying the most approachable personality and accommodating environment. They present the taglines "Let's make healthy happen together with helpful, friendly coaches." They help you lose weight yes, with the cost of full degradation.

It happens silently, exchanged privately between coach to coach, but yes it happens. And often the silent ones are most in need of contravention. Be careful who you trust, and be careful of what you wear. It's very disappointing on my end, to see the horrible labor practices and client services over the years but remain silent about it.

So if you truly want a healthy trainer-client relationship, I truly suggest you find a recommendation by a trusted friend. A trainer is a teacher, we rely on their knowledge of wisdom and skills. Check their credibility and professionalism. Most of the time, katawan lang ang puhunan.

I'm sharing this from the bottom of my heart. I am pained to witness and account these practices over the years, and do nothing about it.

WHAT KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT #3: Once upon my rich self

The title is a catchphrase, I just want to get that out of the way. But good now you're here. You might as well pass me a couple of minutes to hear what I got to say, won't you say?

I grew up in a privileged setting. I am not exactly rich for I am not some senator's daughter. I got involved in a quite similar vibe though. I never had to struggle. My family always had enough, not enough to conquer the world, but enough to live a comfortable lifestyle. As a result, I always get special treatment. I never had to put in the extra effort.

It's easy to stay righteous when you never had to deal with mistreatment. Justice is tilted to the privileged because the privileged always have an alternative. There is no need to feed desperation because there is no desperation at all. Instead of going towards extreme means for survival, the privileged chooses to look the other way instead. To the other end of the spectrum, there is always Plan B.

Let me give you a concrete example. I am 26 years old, living inside the bounds of the Metro Manila Enchanced Quarantine. I could easily be alone right now were it not for a few friends around me. At my age, in the struggling pursuit of a law degree in the South, I needed to detach from my family abode and live a different version of life as a "Tenant". This is important to note because it will come in handy later in the story.

As a law student, I know my rights. I know the legal processes of the law and I am confident that I can protect myself at any time. For a law student, I could quickly preach about the proper way to handle things, in the manner provided in the books I've buried myself into for the past four years. Justice is simple because the instructions are carefully laid out. The law books are perfect, but everything else isn't.

My interpretation of justice is enclosed in the carefully authored books written by the people in the society who never had to personally fight for justice. Those people are educated, able to write their names in different kinds ink and paper. Their version of justice is different. Why should I interpret mine the same way?  Why should the many among the few interpret justice the same way?

As a Tenant, I had to deal with being mistreated. I suppose the label rings as poor, because they certainly made me feel poorly treated. Tenant or not, getting a quarantine pass is a right, not a privilege. And yet I was told I am not getting one because I am an unregistered Tenant. I could enumerate everything that is wrong with that sentence but I am still too mad to account for all of it without going into a frenzy. Basically, logic goes, I am not supposed to eat because I'm not supposed to go out because I am not supposed to receive a quarantine pass of my own.

For the lucky few who has an alternative plan like me, I could easily go to the bank, get some cash, and buy supplies that would last me a month. Or I could just borrow a pass from my neighbor, like what I've been doing for the past weeks now. I could easily look away and save myself the stress and trouble of a pointless debate just to get my point across. Not only do I think it will end up in a huge chaos and I might end up in jail, but I might also end up dead, killed in the hands of men who are supposed to uplift justice. This got me thinking, what about the majority who are unfortunate enough to not have any alternative plan at all? What should they do? Who should they turn to? The same government locking them up in jail cells?

Where is the compassion? What is justice without compassion? It's amazing to see the actions taken as a result of proper education. But what is more amazing is to see the actions taken as a result of frustration.

So before you blame the poor for being poor, try to understand the mindset of the poor. Understand the receiver. You don't explain Geometry to a Five year old. Get it across in the level of education they will understand, because no matter how much you explain Geometry to a Five year old, he will not pay attention.

These people starving in the streets, they will never understand the illegality of their actions, not unless you leave your pedestal yourself and stoop down to their level.

WHAT KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT #3: It will hurt to choose yourself

If you can control the way you think, you control everything around you. Being your best self is ALWAYS hard work. And it will hurt to choose yourself. It will hurt to say no. It will hurt to stay calm. It will hurt to let go of things. It will hurt to stay away from gossip. It will hurt to stay away from negativity. It will hurt to wake up early. It will hurt to stay away from Mcdonalds. It will hurt to stay healthy and happy. And above all, it will hurt to accept the things you cannot change.

It's a decision, one that you make everyday. It will come slowly, some achieve it at 30 while some 26. The way to do it faster is if you help yourself. Stay away from bad influences. Choose your friends. Choose your routine. Choose your community. Choose to sleep at least 7 hours a day. That's a stretch already. Choose to drink water a ton.

I recently deactivated my Twitter and I am certain not to retrieve it again. Not because I hate using it, but so I can stay away from tilling negative thoughts. Believe it or not it does encourage ranting and gossiping, which isn't really healthy. I choose to carry my own water bottle no matter how bulky because I choose to drink more. Help yourself. Peace of mind is a decision, not a destination. Yes you will get there, for sure at 50, but you can get there now.

WHAT KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT #1: It's always partly your fault

People always complain about people leaving.
People always write about people leaving.
But no one writes about why people leave.
No one talks about why people leave.

This kind of approach teaches the already self-conceited minds of late teens and young adults to turn to the other person for selfish blaming.

It's always the other person's fault.
It's never my fault.
But think again.
It's always partly your fault.

Loving yourself is never wrong. Thus, defending yourself is never wrong. But most of the time, we overdo that self-love. I wouldn't blame society for this, especially coming from a generation who did the complete opposite.

Writers did what needed to be done, reminding every woman out there of their power. But power, in every kind, is often abused. And I think we've reached a point in culture where it's too late for a U-turn. Take a look around, women aren't only speaking these days, they're shouting. Nobody listens anymore.

So the next time you point a finger, try to listen. Shut the anger and the blaming, and listen. It's there, buried in your conscience, telling you that it's your fault too.

WHAT KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT: Exposing Anytime Fitness Mall of Asia

I have stopped my fingers numerous times from exposing the dirt that is unfortunately apparent to my once a proud moment that is Anytime Fitness Mall of Asia.

I have lost count in the amount of times I've carried its name in my social media accounts. I am glad to have found my boyfriend there but everything except that is trash to me now. Let me explain.

As a client, I may have not known what goes on after office hours, nor would I bother to know. Perhaps if I didn't encounter a relationship with my current boyfriend, I may have been ignorant forever. But I did encounter a relationship with who happens to work there, alas, I have been thrust along the manipulation that everyone seems to carry there.

I have no idea where it started. At the beginning, everything seemed well. I am proud to have found friends I can call family. Everyday was filled with laughter and teasing. I loved going there. I loved seeing everyone.

Until, the frustrations dump sessions occurred. Everyday was a new day. Everyday there's either a new frustration or an equivalent. I was introduced to the dark persona of the place I once worshipped and preached. At first I was ashamed. I thought of canceling my membership but I was hesitant out of respect. I didn't want them to think bad of my boyfriend who unfortunately still works at such a toxic workplace. Eventually I found myself angered. Now I am mad at everything that goes on there. So before I reach the point where I am so mad I cannot pinpoint why, I might as well write this.

The biggest reason why I lost respect of the place is the Management. Being a graduate of the course, I once underestimated how management works, until I saw how mismanagement works. I've never been exposed to the idea that a well respected franchise could be managed badly. I am ashamed at how the Management industry works nowadays where anyone could be called a Manager. Being a Manager isn't just a promotion, it's a responsibility. A background of management is still just a background. And some people isn't fit for the job. Gone were the days when Management is all about Business. Today, Management is all about People. I am angered at the unprofessionalism everyone including the CEO portray. A Manager isn't a dictator, but a Leader. And a good leader, not only talks, but listens. A good leader solves and never blames. A good leader favors all of his subordinates and does not have a favorite. A good leader is not only effective but most especially efficient. A good leader is proud of his subordinate's success and does not bring them down. A good leader believes that the success of one is the success of all. A good leader respects his subordinates' time. A good leader promotes overall health. A good leader respects decisions and honor privacy and confidentiality. And all of it equates to being a good Manager.

A good Manager does not have a private session only to gossip around the workplace afterwards. A good Manager does not put the blame in one person because it wasn't a good day or a good week or a good month. A good Manager does not bully those who works below him because he himself has been scolded by his superior. A good Manager does not pick a favorite or listens only to one side of the story. A good Manager listens to everyone's opinions without dismissing it as pathetic or useless. A good Manager respects downtime and personal time. A good Manager gives incentives out of motivation not leverage. A good Manager respects and understands his subordinates needs and emergencies. A good Manager trusts his subordinates.

The management that is known to Anytime Fitness Mall of Asia isn't management at all. Instead it should be called, "JUST TO GET BY". I am ashamed and mad that I could choose not to get associated with it at all. And it angers me more that I can't stay true to myself. I can't run away because running away means leaving my boyfriend behind.

Besides all the embarrassing practice this company does, perhaps what annoys me the most is the unprofessionalism. When I found out my boyfriend didn't sign a contract upon entering the establishment years ago, I was shocked. Although I wanted to get the world's attention by exposing this, I remained silent because I simply lost hope. I have lost hope in the company's procedures that things like signing contracts prior to action doesn't really surprise me anymore. I want everyone who works there who shares the same thoughts to stand up and fight but everyone just seemed trapped. Trapped by their fears that nothing can come close to the commission they get working for Anytime Fitness MOA or the stability it offers their family. They get so trapped that they backstab each other. They suck up to the bosses because they're scared to fight their cause. They're scared to shout their voices. I've never met a bunch of adults who cower in children fears. I am so frustrated I can almost give up altogether. I am so tired of pushing when everyone else is pulling. I can't encourage power when everyone choose to be weak, to be stepped on by big names because they don't think they can make it out there. I can't help them if they refuse to accept help. I can't trust them if they choose to betray us because they get so consumed by their fears, insecurities, and a lot of playing safe until they get robbed of life and they won't realize it until they're 80 years old, when it's too late to see the world and gain new experiences because old age and diseases happened.

When that day happens, they'll remember me.
